Monitors: ATC SCM20

As with all things studio, everyone has opinions. Monitors in particular, are popular for debate.

At CCC, we have several options.

There’s old school NS-10’s powered by a Bryston 4B, there’s Dynaudio BM-15a’s, there’s a pair of vintage Auratones, and there are 2 ATC options: SCM25A and
SCM 20, (passive). It is my opinion that the SCM20 is a magic mixing box unlike anything else. You see a lot of 25’s in the fanciest of studios. Yes, they have a bigger frequency range, but the 20 does something special.

There is an army of engineers who’ll swear by mixing on NS-10’s. I understand the concept: If you can get your mix to sound good on those speakers, it should sound good on anything.

The ATC SCM20 has the same effect, but with a speaker that has much more clarity. It is even harder to get your mix to rock on the 20’s, but that extra effort
is worth it! Also, the detail you get when tracking is helpful simply for speed. Of course, you could listen to different speakers when tracking, but why bother? I have a sub on a foot pedal that I can throw in to check low end material, but it’s mostly in the off position.

If you come to mix, you can use any of my options or bring your own. That being said, try a mix on the ATC SCM-20’s and see what it does for you. I’ll offer a free hour for the experiment as a service to the mixing world. Or, you can tell me I’m insane and go back to mixing on your _.
